Artist Demonstration and Community Sand Painting

August 12, 2016
10:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery construct a Sand Mandala in the Neutrogena lounge leading to the exhibition Sacred Realm: Blessings and Good Fortune Across Asia

Museum visitors are invited to watch the construction of an Amitabha Sand Mandala and participate in Community Sand painting for all ages (3 to 103) from 10AM to NOON and  again from 1-4PM

His Imminence Khentul Rinpoche from the Drepung Loseling monastery visited MOIFA last year to select and interpret objects from our Asian collection to install on the exhibit’s Tibetan Buddhist altar.

The Drepung Loseling monks who are leading the program decided that an Amitabha Mandala and a Tara Puja would be most appropriate, based on the exhibit’s cross-cultural nature and wide-ranging ideas of blessings. The Amitabha mandala represents boundless light for healing and longevity; the Tara Puja will offer our community protection from harm, success, and guidance in personal development.

By Museum Admission Single-museum adult visit is $7 for New Mexico residents, $12 for out-of-state visitors; youth 16 and under and members of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation  are always admitted FREE.
