International Folk Arts Week 2016 kicks off with the opening of a new exhibition in the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience.  Under Pressure: Choices Folk Artists Make in Today’s Global Marketplace features art work by local and International artists, along with photos and interview excerpts.  Opening events include Artist demonstrations and hands on activities.

Part of International Folk Arts Week 2016, presented in conjunction with Sacred Realm: Blessings and Good Fortune Across Asia

1-4 PMSpend the afternoon exploring Dayak arts with related hands on activities for ages 3 to 103 led by Museum Educators.  Artist demonstrations and performances by:  Mathew Ngau Jau, musician and instrument-maker.  Mathew was recently honored by the Malaysian government with the title of "Living Artist of Malaysia" for his Sapeh music for which he makes his own instruments.  He is also a singer, dancer and bark painter. A tour highlight has been an audience particiapation blowpipe contest.  He has travelled extensively throughout Asia, Europe and North America. Nancy Ngali, Iban weaver and dancer. Nancy is an acknowledged master weaver in her remote longhouse community of Rumah Garie where there are more than thirty women weavers whose work has won the World Crafts Council-UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicrafts. She is invited to teach the art of Iban ’Pua Kumbu’ weaving throughout Malaysia and in the Asian region and travels to exhibit and promote the works of weavers internationally.  She is also a skilled dancer. Senia Jugi, Iban rattan, bamboo and bembem weaver.  Senia works with rattan, natural bembem or arrowroot and dyed split bamboo. She makes unique container baskets in various sizes and shapes and traditional Iban hats and mats.  Her works have received the UNESCO-World Crafts Council Award of Excellence. For many years she has travelled to remote areas of Sarawak, Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia to conduct workshops on basketry and bag making.Parking lots are TENTED for the International Folk Art Market, once available parking is full, take the FREE shuttle from the IHM parking lot. All by Museum admission: New Mexico resident seniors (60 & up) admitted FREE on Wednesdays; single museum adult visit for New Mexico residents is $7, $12 for out of state visitors, youth 16 and under and Museum of New Mexico Foundation members always FREE!
