Animal Paint-Fest with artist Ron Archuleta Rodriguez

September 1, 2024
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Animal Paint-Fest with artist Ron Archuleta Rodriguez, Check out the Wooden Menagerie on Parade in the museum’s auditorium, then participate in a group project painting large carved-wood animals made by Ron, or create your own peg animal. All supplies provided. Painting will take place in the Outdoor Classroom.

Free First Sunday admission for New Mexico residents.

This year is the 100th anniversary of Zozobra. To celebrate, MOIFA will present two pop-up displays related to two of the most popular aspects of Santa Fe Fiestas, along with hands-on art making for all ages programs.

“Wooden Menagerie on Parade” is MOIFA’s nod to the popular Fiesta event Desfile de los Niños/Pet Parade. For only 15 days, a selection of 42 carved and painted animals—all from MOIFA’s collections—will take up residence in the museum’s auditorium, forming a procession leading up to the stage. Many of these New Mexico animals are part of the Hispano tradition that was the focus of our popular 2014 exhibition Wooden Menagerie. Included in the animal parade will be a Felipe Archuleta giraffe, which was recently conserved and is currently the subject of a series of social media posts following her convalescence after years of suffering from a broken neck. The dates of MOIFA’s animal parade are August 29 to September 12, 2024

Also on Display “Lounging with Zozobra,” a vignette of three works highlighting Zozobra, will be on view August 20 to September 22, 2024.

FREE (Museum Admission Waived with RSVP)

In partnership between The Museum of International Folk Art, CENTER Santa Fe, and Santa Fe Workshops, please join us for an exclusive masterclass with Marta Syrko, an acclaimed contemporary photographer living and working in Lviv, Ukraine. Syrko was recently commissioned for a twelve-work series Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation (2024), which is featured in MOIFA’s exhibition, Amidst Cries from the Rubble: Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine.

Syrko will offer insights into the complexities of addressing social justice issues through photography on a global stage, with a particular focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine. She will discuss how her current environment informs her artistic practice and share her personal journey within the field of photography, including how she balances her artistic and commercial endeavors. The session will include time for dialogue with the artist, moderated by co-curators Laura J. Mueller, PhD, and Nina Medvinskaya. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to view the complete, large-scale photographs from her commission featured in the current exhibition.

Marta Syrko, born in 1995 in Lviv, Ukraine, is an acclaimed contemporary photographer known for her evocative use of light and her ability to blend the real with the fictional through her innovative manipulation of textures such as fabric, smoke, and water. A graduate of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, where she studied art history and art theory, Syrko has developed a unique photographic style deeply rooted in the painting traditions of the past, yet with a modern, cinematic approach. Her work explores themes of nationality, climate change, and self-awareness, and she has gained widespread recognition for her ability to capture the human form in ways that challenge traditional perceptions. Over the past decade, Syrko’s work has been exhibited in major cities such as Paris, London, Arles, Linz, and Venice. She has also garnered acclaim for her collaborations with prestigious institutions like the Dutch National Opera & Ballet. Syrko has made significant contributions to social justice through her photography, including Sculpture Series (2022 - ongoing) and Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation (2024), that reflect her deep engagement with the ongoing war in Ukraine. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the recent 2024 Emerging Talent Award from The Moniker Foundation in New York.

Marta Syrko’s program was made possible with the generous support from the Gale Family Foundation and TOKo Santa Fe.

We are also grateful to the International Folk Art Foundation, Friends of Folk Art, and donors to the Museum of New Mexico Exhibition Development Fund, including Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn, Gwenn and Eivind Djupedal, Rosalind Doherty, Barbara Forslund, and David Vogel and Larry Fulton, for their support of Amidst Cries from the Rubble and related programming.

Ukrainian Photography in the Time of War: The Work of Marta Syrko

September 15, 2024
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Joan and Clifford Vernick Auditorium

Included with Museum Admission. RSVP in Advance Here

Join contemporary Lviv-based photographer Marta Syrko (b. 1995) as she discusses her recently-commissioned series Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation, which debuted in MOIFA’s current exhibition Amidst Cries from the Rubble: Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine presented in the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience. Building on her earlier war-related Sculpture Series, Syrko will explore the ways in which the war has affected her artistic process and will provide a unique perspective on the physical and emotional transformations brought about by the conflict. The session will include a Q&A, allowing the audience to engage directly with Marta and explore her artistic journey alongside the profound themes of her work. ASL interpretation will be provided.

Syrko’s Wrapping Art—Art of Salvation (2024), commissioned expressly for Amidst Cries from the Rubble, captures the profound cultural ramifications of war and the unwavering resilience of the Ukrainian people. From the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion, Ukrainian citizens began wrapping public monuments in Lviv to protect and preserve them. Syrko documented these bandaged monuments, creating a series that reframes and records the critical activity of safeguarding cultural heritage as a distinct artistic practice. Divided into two categories, The Historic Era and The Contemporary Era, the series addresses the importance of preserving both Ukraine’s past and present for the sake of its future.

Taking inspiration from classical Greek and Roman sculptures, Sculpture Series (2022–ongoing) documents the narratives and experiences of Ukrainian soldiers, capturing their physical transformations and adaptations to new circumstances. At their most vulnerable—appearing nearly nude with minimal coverage and their battle scars clearly visible—Syrko uses light and composition to focus on the beauty and grace of their human form.
